Profile
Nico Schlotterbeck is a German centre-back who uses his left-footed passing to start attacks. He can play over an opposing back line or disguise a pass through midfield, helping teammates receive beyond the first line of pressure.
After missing out on Stuttgarter Kickers’ under-16 squad, he developed at VfR Aalen and Karlsruher SC before joining Freiburg in 2017. He won the youth DFB-Pokal in 2018 and made his Bundesliga debut against Hertha BSC on 9 March 2019.
A loan at Union Berlin in 2020/21 preceded his return to Freiburg. In May 2022, he played in Freiburg’s first DFB-Pokal final, clearing a Christopher Nkunku effort before it crossed the goal line. Freiburg eventually lost to RB Leipzig on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
He joined Borussia Dortmund in summer 2022 and started the 2024 Champions League final, which ended in a 2-0 defeat by Real Madrid at Wembley. His passing had helped Dortmund get there: in the semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain, his ball over the defence supplied Niclas Füllkrug for the only goal.
With Germany, Schlotterbeck won the European Under-21 Championship in 2021 before making his senior debut in March 2022. At EURO 2024, he played the full round-of-16 match against Denmark, adding a senior knockout appearance to his youth tournament success.
His first senior international goal arrived on 14 June 2026, when he headed in Nathaniel Brown’s corner during Germany’s 7-1 World Cup opening win over Curaçao. Germany’s tournament ended later that month with a penalty-shootout defeat by Paraguay in the round of 32.
UEFA’s analysis of Dortmund’s November 2025 match at Manchester City illustrates the detail behind his passing. Schlotterbeck moved backwards to create receiving space, shaped towards his left, then sent the ball through to Daniel Svensson. The disguise drew opponents’ attention away from his intended target. That ability to show one option and choose another gives his team a way through pressure, even in a match Dortmund lost 4-1.
Nico Schlotterbeck currently plays for Borussia Dortmund as a centre-back. He has represented Germany internationally.
