Profile
Career & playing style
Patrik Schick is a Czech centre-forward whose scoring combines a strong left foot with well-timed movement. He looks for space around defenders, then attacks the delivery with a header or volley. His value as a target is therefore more than height: the run and the moment he reaches the ball can make a difficult cross playable.
His route to that role began at Sparta Prague, whose academy he joined in 2007. First-team opportunities were limited, and a season on loan at Bohemians 1905 in 2015/16 brought regular senior football. He moved to Sampdoria in 2016, then Roma in 2017, taking his development from Prague into Serie A.
A loan at RB Leipzig in 2019/20 introduced him to the Bundesliga, before he joined Bayer Leverkusen in September 2020. In 2021/22 he scored 24 league goals in 27 appearances, finishing second to Robert Lewandowski in the scoring table.
EURO 2020, played in 2021, brought his finishing to a wider audience. Schick scored five goals, matching Cristiano Ronaldo's total as Czechia reached the quarter-finals. His two goals against Scotland showed his range: a header followed by an audacious shot from near halfway. The second won UEFA's public vote for Goal of the Tournament.
Leverkusen won the Bundesliga and German Cup in 2023/24, while Schick also contributed to their European run. Against Qarabağ in March 2024, he came off the bench to score twice in stoppage time, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 win and sending the club into the Europa League quarter-finals.
In April 2026, two goals in a 2-1 derby win at Cologne carried him to 100 competitive goals for Leverkusen. He converted a penalty before half-time, then finished Nathan Tella's delivery early in the second half.
That June, he played in all three of Czechia's World Cup group matches, starting against South Korea and South Africa and coming off the bench against Mexico. Czechia went out in the group stage, and Schick announced his retirement from international football after their final match.
