Profile
Ibrahim Maza is a midfielder whose close control gives him a way to turn crowded situations into attacks. He can beat an opponent with the ball, find a teammate or shoot from distance. His September 2026 goal against Union Berlin offered a clear example: he evaded challenges before finishing in a 4–0 win.
His development at Bayer Leverkusen also involved working farther from goal. In an interview with the club’s magazine, Maza identified playing in deeper midfield alongside Aleix García as an important step. He said it improved his confidence, consistency and understanding of defending and duels. That adds another dimension to a player who had described himself as a number ten, the creator behind the forwards.
Born in Berlin, Maza played for Reinickendorfer Füchse before progressing through Hertha BSC’s academy. His Bundesliga debut came against Bayern Munich in April 2023. A month later, he scored his first professional goal against Wolfsburg on the final day of the season, an early glimpse of his ability to contribute at senior level.
Regular football in the second division became the next stage of that development. By the 2024/25 campaign, Maza had established himself in Hertha’s midfield. In May 2025, the club announced his move to Leverkusen for the following season, taking him back into the Bundesliga after building experience in Berlin.
His first Leverkusen season brought individual recognition as well as new responsibilities. Maza won the Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Month award for April 2026. The league’s assessment highlighted both chances he created for teammates and his own shooting, illustrating how his attacking contribution could take more than one form.
Internationally, Maza represented Germany at youth level before making his senior debut for Algeria in October 2024. He subsequently played at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which continued into January 2026. Algeria’s run ended in the quarter-finals with a 2–0 defeat by Nigeria.
The 2026 World Cup added another major tournament to that path. Maza started Algeria’s opening match against Argentina and played the full game against Switzerland in July, when a 2–0 defeat ended Algeria’s campaign in the round of 32.
