Profile
Career & playing style
Jonathan Burkardt is a German striker whose movement matters before the shot. He can run across a centre-back to make space for a teammate, then peel into a gap for a pass. He has also described helping to organise his team's first line of pressure, rather than waiting for chances in the box.
Burkardt came through Darmstadt 98's youth system before moving to Mainz in 2014. Mainz gave him his Bundesliga debut against Augsburg on 15 September 2018, when he started and played the full match. His first league goal came away to Borussia Dortmund in June 2020, an early breakthrough in his senior career.
Burkardt was part of the Germany side that won the 2021 European Under-21 Championship. He scored in extra time against Denmark in the quarter-final; Germany advanced on penalties and beat Portugal in the final. Later that year he became under-21 captain.
A long interruption to his Mainz career followed, but the 2024–25 Bundesliga season showed what his finishing could mean across a full campaign. He scored 18 league goals as Mainz finished sixth and qualified for Europe.
Burkardt made his senior Germany debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in October 2024. In July 2025, he moved from Mainz to Eintracht Frankfurt; his first Frankfurt appearance came in the DFB-Pokal against FV Engers that August. The transfer followed more than a decade in Mainz's youth and senior teams.
At Frankfurt, Burkardt explained that he was trying to become more involved in combination play. He described occupying defenders to open space for central midfielders, then breaking free for a run behind or a finish. Bundesliga analysis also noted how he moved out of a defender's sight before receiving, often needing only a touch or two to shoot. His off-ball work and finishing are closely connected.
He won the Bundesliga's Player of the Month award for October 2025. He missed Germany's 2026 World Cup squad but was recalled for the September–October Nations League fixtures. He came off the bench against Serbia on 1 October 2026.
