Profile
Fabian Rieder is a Swiss midfielder with a versatile left foot. He has played centrally and from the flank, but those positions ask different things of him: out wide he can deliver or shoot after finding space, while inside he can receive earlier, connect passes and help win the ball back. His set-piece delivery adds another route to goal.
Rieder's development began in the Young Boys system in Bern, which he joined as a teenager. He moved into the first team and helped the club win Swiss league titles in 2021 and 2023, plus the 2023 Swiss Cup. His final Young Boys appearance came in a Champions League qualifying win over Maccabi Haifa before his move to Rennes in August 2023.
Rennes took him into Ligue 1, then loaned him to VfB Stuttgart for the 2024/25 season. Stuttgart used him across attacking midfield and wide areas, and he was part of the squad that won the 2025 DFB-Pokal. The spell broadened his experience of German football and the Champions League without fixing him to one attacking position.
For Switzerland, he made his senior debut at the 2022 World Cup. At Euro 2024, he went from substitute appearances in the group to starts against Germany and in the knockout rounds. In the win over Italy, a Rieder free kick forced a save onto the post. It was a concrete example of how his left foot can threaten even when he is not the player finishing an open-play move.
He joined Augsburg from Rennes in September 2025. During 2025/26 he became one of Augsburg's joint leading Bundesliga scorers, but his value was not confined to goals. Rieder described a shift from the wider role he often had at Stuttgart into central midfield, where he can cover ground between boxes, press, contest duels and then use his passing or shooting after the regain. That combination explains why a nominal winger label alone misses part of his game.
Rieder also played in Switzerland's 2026 World Cup run, including the quarter-final against Argentina, where he started before being replaced late in normal time. Switzerland lost after extra time. Across his club and international roles, the thread is a technically assured left foot paired with defensive work: he can help start an attack after a turnover as well as supply its final pass or shot.
Fabian Rieder currently plays for FC Augsburg as a midfielder. He has represented Switzerland internationally.
