Profile
Deniz Undav is a German forward whose game combines finishing with the work that helps an attack reach the penalty area. He can play at the front of the line or alongside another striker, holding the ball and bringing teammates into moves. That flexibility gives him a role beyond waiting for the final pass.
His movement helps explain the combination. Bundesliga analysis describes him slipping away from his marker to find the place where a chance develops. Sebastian Hoeneß has also highlighted his willingness to drop as deep as midfield to help find a free teammate. He can therefore help build an attack as well as finish it.
His route to that level was unusually long. After joining Werder Bremen's academy in 2007, he was released five years later and continued through SC Weyhe, Havelse and Eintracht Braunschweig's second team. Meppen brought him into Germany's third tier in 2018; Union Saint-Gilloise took him to Belgium in 2020.
At Union, Undav helped win promotion to Belgium's top division and then played in a side that challenged for the title. A move to Brighton followed in 2022, with Premier League football arriving in the 2022/23 season. His development crossed different levels and countries before he established himself in the Bundesliga.
Stuttgart initially brought him from Brighton on loan in August 2023. He formed a productive attacking partnership with Serhou Guirassy as the club finished second in the 2023/24 Bundesliga. In January 2024 he scored a hat-trick in a 5–2 win over RB Leipzig; Stuttgart made his move permanent in August that year.
The 2025 German Cup final showed both sides of his attacking game. Against Arminia Bielefeld, he ran through and passed to Enzo Millot for one goal, then finished another chance himself as Stuttgart won 4–2. He also started the following year's final, which ended in a 3–0 defeat by Bayern Munich.
At the 2026 World Cup, Undav came off the bench to score both Germany goals in a 2–1 group-stage win over Ivory Coast. One was a close-range volley from Nadiem Amiri's cross. Germany's tournament later ended against Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32, a match Undav started.
