Profile
Ridle Baku has worked in several right-sided roles: full-back, wing-back and a position farther forward. The link is his repeated running. He advances to offer a passing option, then has to recover when possession turns over. His movement between those jobs explains more about him than a single position label.
He came through Mainz's youth system and broke into the senior side in 2017/18. His Bundesliga debut on 29 April 2018 was abrupt: Mainz recalled him while he was travelling with the reserve team, then started him against RB Leipzig. He scored in a 3–0 win. Six days later he scored at Borussia Dortmund as Mainz won 2–1 and secured Bundesliga survival.
Mainz used him in midfield, but his career increasingly took shape out wide. His attacking instinct followed him into deeper positions. Starting at right-back gives him space ahead to attack with his pace, while the role still demands defensive recovery. He can stretch play without staying high like a winger.
Wolfsburg signed him from Mainz in October 2020, describing a player able to cover defensive and midfield positions. There he became associated with the right wing-back role. His versatility could give the side width in possession and a defender on the same flank when it lost the ball.
Germany's 2021 European Under-21 Championship brought a different milestone. Baku started the final against Portugal on 6 June. He found Lukas Nmecha for the only goal as Germany won the title, a clear example of his attacking value on the right.
In January 2025 Baku joined RB Leipzig from Wolfsburg. The Bundesliga's transfer account described an option across the right flank, whose pace, forward running, tackling and ball use appealed to Leipzig. Baku has described full-back as a job that demands attacking, defending and crossing. His forward runs work best alongside the discipline to recover when the ball is lost.
He returned to Germany's senior setup during 2025 World Cup qualifying. After missing the 2026 World Cup squad, he was selected for Germany's October 2026 Nations League games.
Ridle Baku currently plays for RB Leipzig as a right-back. He has represented Germany internationally.
