Profile
Assan Ouédraogo gives a midfield possession a change of speed. He can collect the ball in a deeper area, carry it past the first line of pressure and then choose a pass or a shot. The Bundesliga's description of his powerful running fits a player who can advance an attack without waiting for a teammate to move the ball for him.
He developed at Schalke and was part of the club's German U17 championship side in 2022. Germany's U17 team gave him another kind of responsibility in June 2023: he started the European Championship final against France and scored the decisive penalty in the shootout. He also belonged to Germany's U17 World Cup-winning squad later that year. Individually, he received the bronze Fritz Walter medal for youth players.
Schalke brought him into senior football at the start of the 2023/24 second-division season. On his debut against Hamburg, he scored even as Schalke lost 5-3, becoming the club's youngest player and goalscorer. RB Leipzig signed him from Schalke in summer 2024, but injuries limited his first season there. His route into the Bundesliga therefore took longer than his early senior breakthrough had suggested.
The next step arrived in 2025/26. After substitute outings, he scored on his first Bundesliga start of the season against Cologne. A November win over Werder Bremen showed a different part of his threat: he escaped pressure, created chances and moved the ball onto his left foot for a long-range goal. His ability to move from carrying to shooting makes him difficult to defend as a midfielder rather than a fixed forward. That season was also interrupted by injury: he damaged a tendon behind his left knee in the Bremen game, then hurt tendons in the same knee against Freiburg on his return in January 2026, which kept him out for more than two months.
His senior Germany debut came against Slovakia on 17 November 2025. He entered late in a World Cup qualifier and finished a move set up by Leroy Sané, scoring Germany's sixth goal. Germany later added him to its 2026 World Cup squad after Lennart Karl withdrew, but he did not play in the tournament. Back at Leipzig, he hurt his right shoulder in pre-season training in August 2026, then injured the same shoulder again in a 5–0 win over Hamburg that September and needed surgery.
The through-line is his capacity to turn central space into attacking ground. He does not have to begin high up the pitch to influence the final third: a carry draws defenders, while his passing and willingness to shoot give him choices when he reaches them.
Assan Ouédraogo currently plays for RB Leipzig as a central midfielder. He has represented Germany internationally.
