Profile
Nicolás Capaldo's career has made his position harder to capture with a single label. He arrived in Germany as a central midfielder, but Hamburg also used him on the right of a back three. The link is his front-foot approach: Hamburg praised his ball-winning in midfield before later fielding him in defence.
Capaldo began at Deportivo Mac Allister in his native Argentina before entering Boca Juniors' youth system. He made his Boca first-team debut in February 2019. That route gave him a senior platform before his move to Europe, though his later roles would stretch well beyond the midfield position in which Hamburg first described him.
Argentina's under-23 side supplied an early international marker. In January 2020 Capaldo scored against Chile in a 2-0 win at the South American pre-Olympic tournament. Argentina went on to win that competition.
He joined Red Bull Salzburg from Boca in summer 2021. In four seasons there he won two Austrian league titles and a cup. He also played Champions League football. His midfield game suited an aggressive approach: Hamburg's recruitment staff later singled out his ball-winning, dynamism and readiness to take risks, qualities that help explain why he could cover more than one role.
Hamburg signed him in July 2025 after returning to the Bundesliga. A match against Mainz that October showed the value of his first step after a regain: he won the ball in midfield and released Jean-Luc Dompé for a goal. By December, against Hoffenheim, he was lining up on the right of a three-man defence. Those are different starting positions, but both ask him to read when to close space and when to move the ball forward.
His international story continued in June 2026, when he made his senior debut as a second-half substitute in a pre-World Cup friendly against Honduras. He was not included in Argentina's final 26-man squad for the tournament. In September he headed the opener in Hamburg's 2-1 league win over Cologne. His career is one of positional flexibility built on active ball-winning, rather than a permanent switch from midfielder to conventional centre-back.
Nicolás Capaldo currently plays for Hamburger SV as a centre-back. He has represented Argentina internationally.
