Profile
Mattia Zaccagni is an Italian wide attacker who combines taking on defenders with creating chances for others. Working from the left, he offers both a route past an opponent and a pass that sets up a shot. His attacking value lies in that combination of dribbling, supplying teammates and finishing moves himself.
His threat also comes from moving into space for a teammate’s pass. In November 2022, Maurizio Sarri highlighted how Luis Alberto had sent him through as soon as a gap appeared. It is a useful example of why watching only his touches misses part of his contribution: he can be the runner receiving the decisive ball as well as its creator.
Born in Cesena, Zaccagni developed at Bellaria and made his professional debut in 2012. Hellas Verona brought him in during 2013, and loans at Venezia and Cittadella formed part of his early career. He played in Serie A for Verona before the Cittadella spell, where he was part of a Serie C title-winning side.
He returned to Verona in 2016. The 2019 victory over Cittadella that took Verona back to Serie A became a particularly important memory: in a later club interview, he described it as a turning point in his life and career. His route upwards had included both loans and football outside the top division.
Zaccagni joined Lazio in summer 2021 and began another stage of that development in European competition. He recalled his goal away to Porto during his first European campaign as a special milestone. In summer 2024, he became Lazio’s captain, adding a leadership responsibility to his work in attack.
For Italy, his defining EURO 2024 moment came against Croatia on 24 June. Introduced as a substitute, he received Riccardo Calafiori’s pass and curled the equaliser around Dominik Livaković in the 98th minute. The 1–1 draw secured a place in the last 16; Switzerland then eliminated Italy 2–0, with Zaccagni appearing after half-time.
Another major club occasion followed on 13 May 2026: Zaccagni started the Coppa Italia final, which Lazio lost 2–0 to Inter.
Mattia Zaccagni currently plays for Lazio as a left winger. He has represented Italy internationally.
