Career & playing style
Mike Maignan is a French goalkeeper who can influence an attack from his own penalty area. His passing gives teammates different routes forward: through opponents pressing high up the pitch, out towards a winger, or into the space behind a defence.
Born in Cayenne on 3 July 1995 and raised in Villiers-le-Bel near Paris, he developed in Paris Saint-Germain’s academy before moving to Lille in August 2015. His Ligue 1 debut the following month began with an immediate test: after Vincent Enyeama was sent off against Rennes, Maignan came on and saved Paul-Georges Ntep’s penalty.
He became Lille’s first-choice goalkeeper in 2017. The 2018/19 season brought the UNFP award for Ligue 1’s best goalkeeper as Lille finished second. Two years later, he helped the club win the 2020/21 league title, keeping 21 clean sheets in that league campaign.
His transfer to AC Milan took effect on 1 July 2021. In his first Italian season, he helped Milan win Serie A, recording 17 league clean sheets and receiving the competition’s best goalkeeper award for 2021/22. He also started the 3-2 victory over Inter in January 2025 that secured the 2024 Italian Super Cup.
Maignan made his senior France debut against Ukraine on 7 October 2020. At EURO 2024, he kept four clean sheets as France reached the semi-finals, and UEFA selected him for its Team of the Tournament.
He also played at the 2026 World Cup, where France finished fourth. He was in goal for the third-place match against England, which ended in a 6-4 defeat on 18 July.
Milan’s 3-1 win at Real Madrid in November 2024 shows how his distribution works. UEFA’s analysis highlighted a pass to Álvaro Morata dropping into space, then longer deliveries to Noah Okafor as spaces opened on the left and behind Madrid’s defenders. Alongside his reaction save from Brahim Díaz, those choices helped earn him the Player of the Match award.
