Profile
Scott McTominay is a Scotland midfielder whose goalscoring threat often comes from joining the attack. He can win possession and carry play forward, while runs into the penalty area give teammates another target beyond the forwards.
Born in Lancaster on 8 December 1996, McTominay entered Manchester United’s academy at five and made his first-team debut against Arsenal in May 2017. He went on to win the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
He joined Napoli in August 2024. His first season, 2024/25, brought a Serie A title and the league’s Most Valuable Player award. He scored 12 league goals, including one in the final-day victory over Cagliari that secured the championship.
That season also showed how his attacking instincts could fit a planned team move. Against Torino in April 2025, he finished crosses from Frank Anguissa and Matteo Politano in a 2–0 win. Antonio Conte explained that both goals came from moves rehearsed in training: midfield support was part of Napoli’s route to goal.
For Scotland, his senior debut came against Costa Rica in March 2018. He scored seven goals in qualifying for EURO 2024, including two against Spain, then scored in the 1–1 draw with Switzerland at the finals.
In November 2025, his overhead kick opened the scoring in Scotland’s 4–2 win over Denmark at Hampden. The result secured the country’s first men’s World Cup appearance since 1998, with late goals from Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean completing the qualification victory.
He played at the 2026 World Cup, where Scotland beat Haiti before losing to Morocco and Brazil and exiting in the group stage. Against Brazil, he twice met Kieran Tierney crosses with headers that Alisson saved, an example of the aerial threat he can add from midfield.
Scott McTominay currently plays for Napoli as a central midfielder. He has represented Scotland internationally.
