Profile
Emil Holm is a Swedish right-back whose work on the flank combines defensive contests with forward runs. He can tackle or challenge in the air near his own box, then carry the ball into space and look for a cross. That range is why he has also been used as a wing-back, with more ground to cover along the touchline.
Holm developed in IFK Göteborg’s youth system after starting at Annebergs IF. His move to Danish club SønderjyskE in January 2021 took him away from his hometown football. Spezia bought him later that year but left him in Denmark on loan for another season, giving him a longer run there before his first Serie A campaign in 2022/23.
Spezia gave Holm his first Italian top-flight platform. Atalanta then took him on loan for 2023/24, using him as a right-sided wing-back. He was part of the squad that won the Europa League against Bayer Leverkusen in May 2024, although the final match report lists him among the unused substitutes. He shared the team honour without playing in that final.
Bologna signed Holm permanently from Spezia in June 2024. His right-side game links two jobs: he can step into a duel to interrupt an attack and, after possession changes, advance to offer a wide passing or crossing route. In May 2025 he started Bologna’s Coppa Italia final against AC Milan, playing until the 76th minute as Bologna won 1–0.
His path through Bologna included a February 2026 loan to Juventus. The clubs agreed a deal running to 30 June, with an option for Juventus to buy him; Bologna named him again in its group for preseason work in July. It was a short change of setting between his Bologna spells, rather than an uninterrupted stay in one side.
Sweden had already seen the same right-flank movement. On his under-21 debut against Finland in June 2021, the federation described a long run from right-back that nearly produced a goal. He then started at right-back on his senior debut against Mexico in November 2022. Those matches show the recurring shape of his role: defend the flank, then use the open lane to move the attack forward.
In May 2026 he was named in Sweden’s squad for the World Cup, but a muscle injury forced him to withdraw before the tournament. In September 2026 he injured his right hamstring playing for Sweden against Romania, and in October he had surgery to repair the tendon.
Emil Holm currently plays for Bologna as a right-back. He has represented Sweden internationally.
