Profile
Mile Svilar is a goalkeeper whose development took him from Belgium through Portugal to Italy. Born and raised in Belgium, he learned the position with close guidance from his father, Ratko, also a goalkeeper. Anderlecht provided his early club grounding before his move to Benfica.
At Benfica, his introduction to the Champions League came unusually early. He started against Manchester United on 18 October 2017, aged 18 years and 52 days, breaking Iker Casillas’s goalkeeper age record for the competition proper. It was an early landmark rather than a shortcut to an established first-team place: he later gained experience with Benfica B in Portugal’s second division.
His international path connected his Belgian upbringing with Serbia. On 1 September 2021, he replaced Predrag Rajković at half-time in Serbia’s 4–0 win over Qatar in Debrecen. When explaining his choice the following year, he said that, despite growing up in Belgium, he felt Serbian and had chosen to represent Serbia.
Roma signed him in July 2022. He arrived with Rui Patrício ahead of him and framed the move as another chance to learn. By Roma’s 2024 Europa League run, he had taken over as a starter, turning the promise of his teenage years into a more substantial role.
His approach with the ball is adaptable. In his Roma presentation, Svilar explained that he liked both short and long passing, choosing according to what the match required.
Preparation and instinct also meet in his penalty saving. Against Feyenoord on 22 February 2024, he stopped two spot-kicks in the shootout that took Roma through their Europa League play-off. He explained that he had studied the takers with his goalkeeping coach but decided his diving direction at the moment of each penalty. He also credited Daniele De Rossi’s trust with helping him feel calmer.
The breakthrough was followed by sustained recognition. Lega Serie A named Svilar its best goalkeeper for 2024/25 and again for 2025/26. Its assessment of the earlier season highlighted his reflexes, reading of play and composure, complementing the preparation and decision-making he had described himself.
