Profile
Bryan Cristante is a midfielder whose career has moved from adding goals at Atalanta to organising play from deeper areas at Roma. At Atalanta he offered a goal threat from central midfield, including in the air. Roma later described a different mechanism: winning midfield duels, moving the ball through the opposition lines and switching play to the far side.
Cristante came through AC Milan's academy and then had spells at Benfica, Palermo and Pescara before finding a more settled platform at Atalanta. His 2017–18 season there brought nine Serie A goals, including three headed league goals. He also scored twice in Atalanta's 5-1 Europa League win away to Everton. Those finishes show a midfielder with a route into the penalty area, rather than a striker.
Roma announced his arrival from Atalanta in June 2018, initially on loan. He adapted to a deeper midfield job alongside Steven Nzonzi. Against Parma in December 2018, he combined defensive duels with two passing choices: a direct ball through the opposition lines or a longer switch to the far side. Both can turn a recovery into an attack.
That deeper role did not erase his earlier range. Roma has used him as an advanced midfielder, in central midfield and in central defence. He can protect space in front of the back line, circulate possession or step forward when an extra body is needed around the box. In a February 2026 win over Cremonese, coach Gian Piero Gasperini made one such adjustment, pushing him nearer the forward line to press.
He started Roma's 1–0 win over Feyenoord in the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League final. For Italy, he came on for Nicolò Barella during the EURO 2020 final against England in July 2021; Italy won the title on penalties.
The international story also has a difficult later chapter. Cristante entered Italy's March 2026 World Cup playoff final against Bosnia and Herzegovina after 70 minutes. He missed in the shootout and Italy failed to reach the World Cup. That May, he entered Roma's all-time top ten for appearances.
Bryan Cristante currently plays for AS Roma as a defensive midfielder. He has represented Italy internationally.
