Profile
Gianluca Mancini's game is built around leaving a centre-back's starting position when needed. He can step into a forward receiving with his back to goal, denying the turn early. When Roma have the ball, the same willingness to move can take him beyond the first line of pressure. Those advances ask a teammate to cover the space he leaves behind.
His route to that role began in Fiorentina's youth system, where he moved from central midfield into defence. A loan to Perugia gave him senior Serie B football; Atalanta then bought his rights but let him finish the 2016-17 season at Perugia. Mancini made his Serie A debut for Atalanta in September 2017 and became a regular under Gian Piero Gasperini the following season.
Atalanta often used him as an outside centre-back in a back five. Their close-marking press suited his habit of following a forward towards the ball, while his recovery runs helped when play went behind that first challenge. He also drove forward or found passes through the lines. He could build attacks as well as stop them.
He joined Roma from Atalanta in July 2019. Three years later, he played in Roma's 1-0 Europa Conference League final win over Feyenoord. His ball into the penalty area reached Nicolò Zaniolo for the decisive goal. The moment showed another route from defence to attack: a centre-back could start the move with a delivery, without scoring himself.
Mancini's attacking contribution has taken different forms. He headed Roma's winning goal against Lazio in the April 2024 derby. UEFA's technical observers later traced a September 2025 Europa League goal at Nice from his initial pass, through his run into midfield, to a late arrival in the box for a volley. In May 2026 he scored twice in another Roma derby win over Lazio.
Italy first used him at senior level in 2019. Selected for Euro 2024, he made his tournament debut in the round-of-16 defeat by Switzerland. He also started Italy's March 2026 World Cup play-off loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina, which ended their qualification bid, and the September Nations League loss to Belgium.
Gianluca Mancini currently plays for AS Roma as a centre-back. He has represented Italy internationally.
