Career & playing style
Wesley França is a wide defender who turns distance into a chance to attack. From the right he surges beyond teammates and crosses; from the left he still drives forward. Such runs leave ground to recover when possession changes. At Roma, he has described balancing attack with defensive work as central to his development.
Wesley entered Flamengo's youth system in 2021 and worked into the first team. Right-back became his route into senior football. Lega Serie A describes a player who carries the ball at speed, attacks space and takes on opponents instead of simply recycling possession out wide.
A February 2025 Supercopa do Brasil final gave a concrete example. Starting at right-back against Botafogo, Wesley sent an early low cross into the area as Flamengo went on to win 3-1. It was a team title, not an individual scoring feat. He also played in Flamengo's 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign before departing for Italy in July.
Brazil gave him a senior debut against Colombia on 20 March 2025. Roma signed him permanently from Flamengo on 28 July. His first Serie A appearance for the Italian club, against Bologna in August, ended with his goal deciding a 1-0 win. The move asked him to play as a wing-back, choosing when to press and when to protect the flank.
The job did not stay confined to his original side. Wesley explained that he played on the right against Bologna before Roma's coach tried him on the left. He said he was becoming more alert to Italian tactical demands and to choosing well with the ball. In March 2026, he described defensive and attacking balance as something he was still learning.
His attacking role brought goals after that first afternoon. In May 2026, he scored with a shot towards the far corner in Roma's 4-0 league win over Fiorentina. It showed a second way he could contribute: a defender known for gaining ground down the flank also finished a move himself.
The international path had a different turn. Roma's July 2025 announcement recorded his Brazil debut, while its coach later confirmed Wesley had to miss the 2026 World Cup. That absence should not be confused with playing in the finals.
