Career & playing style
Nicolò Fagioli is a central midfielder whose value is clearest between the first pass out of defence and the attack that follows. He looks for a position where a centre-back can find him, then uses the next pass to change the angle of play. That makes him a link in possession rather than a midfielder defined mainly by goals.
His route to senior football began in Juventus’s youth system, which he joined in 2015. He progressed through the club’s Under-23 side before a 2021/22 loan to Cremonese in Serie B. Juventus credited him with an important role in Cremonese’s promotion to Serie A. The loan gave him a full second-division season before he returned to compete for minutes in Turin.
A substitute appearance at Lecce in October 2022 brought his first Serie A goal for Juventus, a winning goal. He scored again against Inter soon afterwards, but the longer-term change was his place in the midfield rotation. Juventus highlighted his awareness, passing, positioning and tackling while noting his continued selection after those headline goals.
Fagioli moved to Fiorentina on loan in February 2025 under an agreement that could make the move permanent, and he joined the club permanently that summer. His job there offered a useful picture of his style. In UEFA’s analysis of Fiorentina’s May 2025 Conference League semi-final against Real Betis, he and Yacine Adli were the two deeper midfielders showing for passes from the centre-backs. Their positioning helped Fiorentina move the ball wide and create space for the wing-back.
He also supplied a very different moment in Europe in February 2026: a dipping extra-time volley against Jagiellonia Białystok as Fiorentina survived a Conference League knockout play-off on aggregate. Fiorentina’s run ended in the quarter-finals against Crystal Palace. The goal showed that he can decide an isolated attacking moment, even though his regular influence starts earlier in a move.
With Italy, Fagioli started the defeat to Switzerland in the round of 16 at EURO 2024. He returned to the senior squad for the September–October 2026 Nations League window after last appearing in October 2024, according to the federation. FIGC match reports then list him in the starting XI against Türkiye and France. Those appearances matter separately from the call-up: they show him back in Italy’s midfield, where receiving and redirecting play remain the parts of his game to watch.
