Profile
Hakan Çalhanoğlu is a Turkish midfielder who developed from an attacking playmaker into an organiser at the base of midfield. His game combines passes through opposition lines with set-piece delivery and long-range shooting, giving him ways to influence attacks from well behind the forwards.
From deep, he can see more of the ball and choose when to slow possession or accelerate an attack. The role also demands work without it: checking around him, directing nearby midfielders and closing passing lanes. UEFA’s analysis of Inter’s 2024 win over Arsenal highlighted both his defensive organisation and his passes through opposition lines.
Born in Mannheim, Germany, Çalhanoğlu made his professional breakthrough with Karlsruher SC, helping the club win the third division in 2013. Hamburg took him into the Bundesliga that year. His 41-metre free-kick against Borussia Dortmund in 2014 provided an early demonstration of his shooting range.
He joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 and played Champions League football there before moving to AC Milan in 2017. In 2021 he crossed the city to Inter, where his responsibilities expanded into controlling play from deeper positions.
He helped Inter reach the Champions League finals in 2023 and 2025, and won Serie A in 2023/24. The 2025/26 campaign brought a double of Serie A and the Coppa Italia. His scoring threat remained: two goals and an assist against Como in the cup semi-final helped Inter complete a comeback.
Çalhanoğlu made his senior Türkiye debut in September 2013. At EURO 2024, he captained the side and scored against Czechia as Türkiye reached the quarter-finals, taking his international career back to the country where he had developed as a player.
He also captained Türkiye at the 2026 World Cup, their first appearance at the finals for 24 years. Their return ended in the group stage, despite a closing victory against the United States.
Hakan Çalhanoğlu currently plays for Inter as a central midfielder. He has represented Türkiye internationally.
