Profile
Alessandro Bastoni is an Italian centre-back whose left foot helps turn defence into attack. From the left of a back three, he can carry the ball beyond an opponent, find a forward pass or deliver a cross. That gives his team another route upfield without requiring a midfielder to collect every ball from the defence.
Born in Casalmaggiore on 13 April 1999, he developed in Atalanta’s youth system after a scout, the father of a schoolmate, arranged a trial. Inter signed him in summer 2017, then left him on loan at Atalanta. A further loan season at Parma preceded his move into Inter’s first team in 2019.
His Inter debut came against Sampdoria on 28 September 2019. He established himself in the back three during that first campaign and won his first Serie A title in 2020/21.
Further milestones followed: Lega Serie A named him its best defender for 2023/24, another title-winning season. He played in the Champions League finals of 2023 and 2025, both ending in defeat for Inter. In 2025/26, a league-and-Coppa Italia double brought his third Scudetto.
For Italy, his senior debut came in the 4–0 friendly win over Estonia in November 2020. He was part of the EURO 2020 winning squad the following summer, playing against Wales while learning alongside Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci rather than displacing the established pair.
The 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign ended painfully. In the play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 31 March, he was sent off before half-time. Italy drew 1–1 and lost the penalty shootout, missing a third successive World Cup.
His defensive work depends on judging when to leave the line and when to protect it. UEFA’s analysis of Inter at Leverkusen in December 2024 showed him closing down Florian Wirtz between the lines, then covering inside when a colleague stepped out. Against Nathan Tella, he used his strength to delay the runner and give team-mates time to recover their positions.
Alessandro Bastoni currently plays for Inter as a centre-back. He has represented Italy internationally.
