Profile
Corentin Tolisso is a French midfielder whose attacking contribution comes from the freedom to move beyond a fixed central position. He can play behind the striker, as a supporting central midfielder or farther back. That range lets him help develop an attack and then become involved closer to goal, rather than leaving the final action entirely to the forwards.
His work on Lyon’s left side offers a clear example. In their 2026 win over Rennes, he moved wider and exchanged positions with Abner and Afonso Moreira, helping create extra passing options around the defence. He also supplied the cross for Roman Yaremchuk’s equaliser. The mechanism is movement between positions: a central midfielder can become the player delivering from the flank.
Born in Tarare, Tolisso played youth football with Stade Amplepuisien and FC Pays de l’Arbresle before joining Lyon in 2007. His professional breakthrough came during the 2013/14 season, and he became an important part of the midfield the following year. Lyon was both his route into senior football and the starting point for his move abroad.
Bayern Munich signed him in June 2017. He scored on his Bundesliga debut and won the league in his first season, beginning a spell that brought five German league titles. In 2020 he also helped Bayern win the Champions League, coming on as a substitute in the final against Paris Saint-Germain.
For France, Tolisso made his senior debut against Spain in March 2017. He played five matches during the victorious 2018 World Cup campaign, starting the quarter-final against Uruguay and coming off the bench in the final against Croatia.
He returned to Lyon in July 2022. During the 2025/26 season, Paulo Fonseca used him at several midfield depths, including behind the attack, while his selection in the UNFP Ligue 1 team of the season recognised his contribution. That later chapter brought together the positional range evident in his play and the experience accumulated in Germany and with France.
