Profile
Jonathan Clauss gives a team attacking width from the right, using repeated forward runs and deliveries into the penalty area. His game combines the running of a wing-back with the passing of a creator: he can supply a cross, take a corner or play a pass behind the defence. Nice's analysis of his February 2025 performance against Montpellier highlighted both his sprinting and his passes leading to shots.
There is more to that delivery than simply reaching the byline. In the April 2026 Coupe de France semi-final against Strasbourg, Clauss sent Elye Wahi through with the outside of his right foot for the opening goal. It was a precise example of how a player stationed wide can find a direct route behind the opposing defence.
His route to that level was unusually long. After training at Strasbourg, Clauss played in the lower divisions of France and Germany, with stops including SV Linx, Raon-l'Étape and Avranches. His first professional contract came with Quevilly-Rouen in 2017, years after leaving Strasbourg's academy. Arminia Bielefeld then offered another step up, and he helped the German club win promotion in 2020.
Clauss joined Lens that summer and developed his top-flight career under Franck Haise. During his time there, he made his France debut against Côte d'Ivoire on 25 March 2022. That progression from lower-league football to international selection gives his development a different shape from the usual academy-to-first-team pathway.
A move to Marseille followed in summer 2022. On 25 July 2024, Nice announced his arrival from Marseille, reuniting him with Haise. Clauss said the prospect of working with the coach again had influenced his decision. He had also been selected for France's EURO 2024 squad, but did not play in the tournament.
His delivery helped Nice reach the 2026 Coupe de France final, where his corner supplied Djibril Coulibaly's goal in a 3–1 defeat by Lens. A week later, he contributed a different kind of decisive moment: a left-footed finish after a cleared throw-in opened the scoring against Saint-Étienne. Nice won that relegation play-off second leg 4–1 on 29 May, securing their place in Ligue 1.
Jonathan Clauss currently plays for Nice as a right wing-back. He has represented France internationally.
