Profile
Gonçalo Ramos is a Portuguese centre-forward whose work begins before the chance arrives. He links passes, presses defenders and adjusts his position to find room in the box. His own explanation of the role is practical: against a compact defence, a small change of position can be enough to create a finish.
He developed through Olhanense and Benfica, progressing through Benfica's youth teams before reaching its senior side. His first-team debut against Aves in July 2020 brought two goals in a 4–0 win. He later helped Benfica win the 2022/23 Portuguese league title, completing a path from the academy to a championship-winning first team.
Playing in several positions helped shape that progression. Ramos has described learning combination play as a young midfielder before working on the wings and in attack. At Benfica he also played in support of Darwin Núñez before becoming the main centre-forward. The background helps explain why he sees connecting play and pressing as part of a striker's job.
His most striking early international performance came against Switzerland in the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup. On his first start at the tournament, he scored a hat-trick in Portugal's 6–1 win. The goals came in different ways: a left-footed shot after turning towards goal, a near-post touch from Diogo Dalot's cross and a chip over Yann Sommer. He also supplied Raphael Guerreiro's goal.
Ramos joined Paris Saint-Germain in summer 2023, initially on loan. During that spell, Paris won two Champions League titles. His team role also included being ready to contribute from the bench: in a June 2025 FIFA interview, he stressed that a player needed to be prepared whether asked for a few minutes or a full match.
AC Milan announced his permanent signing from Paris in June 2026. The move added an Italian chapter to a career built on linking attacks, working without the ball and finding room to finish. That summer he played for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup, coming off the bench to head a stoppage-time winner against Croatia in the round of 32 before Spain knocked Portugal out in the last 16.
