Profile
Valentin Rongier's midfield game revolves around choosing the right moment to change the pace of an attack. He can keep a move alive with another pass, play forward when the opening appears, or help teammates recover their positions. Franck Haise described those decisions in April 2026: Rongier's value lies in organising the team as well as using the ball.
Born in Mâcon, Rongier entered Nantes' youth system in 2001 and worked his way towards the first team. His Ligue 1 debut came against Reims in October 2014. It was the start of a senior career built at the club where he had spent his football education, rather than an immediate move elsewhere after his academy years.
His first league start followed at Bordeaux in May 2015, and he scored his first Ligue 1 goal against Troyes that October. By August 2017 he was wearing Nantes' captain's armband. Those milestones trace a gradual increase in responsibility, from a young player earning appearances to someone trusted to lead the side.
Rongier joined Marseille in the summer of 2019, arriving during André Villas-Boas' time as coach. He went on to play under Jorge Sampaoli and Igor Tudor and also captained the club. Marseille finished as French league runners-up in 2020, 2022 and 2025, giving his years there several sustained challenges near the top of the table.
European football supplied another marker. Rongier started the second leg of Marseille's Europa Conference League semi-final against Feyenoord in May 2022; a goalless draw left Marseille eliminated on aggregate. Individual recognition followed when he was named in the UNFP Ligue 1 team of the season for 2022/23.
A move to Rennes in July 2025 opened the next chapter. In April 2026 he scored in stoppage time to secure a 2–1 derby victory over Nantes, the club that had developed him. Rennes supporters voted him their player of the match, adding a decisive scoring moment to a career often defined by midfield organisation.
Valentin Rongier currently plays for Rennes as a central midfielder.
