Profile
Diego Moreira's career has been shaped by two jobs along the touchline. As a winger, he can start high and look for a route into the penalty area; as a wing-back, he has a longer strip of pitch to cover before and after the attack. The position on a team sheet tells only part of that story.
Born in Liège, Moreira developed at Standard Liège and Benfica. He played in Benfica's 2022 UEFA Youth League final victory over Salzburg. UEFA credits him with a cushioned lay-off before the opening goal and a through ball before another. Those actions show an early part of his game beyond running at defenders: finding a teammate in useful space.
Moreira moved from Benfica to Chelsea in July 2023 and made his first-team debut against AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup that August. A Lyon loan followed in 2023/24, then a permanent move to Strasbourg in summer 2024. In France, his wide play took several forms: Strasbourg used him on the left as a winger, wing-back and full-back, sometimes farther inside or on the right.
Those roles demand different decisions. Higher up, he can turn toward goal; from wing-back, the run often begins deeper and needs defensive recovery. Milan coach Rúben Amorim described him as a wing-back in August 2026 while noting that he could play elsewhere. The evidence points to tactical range rather than one fixed attacking position.
His international path also changed. Moreira represented Portugal through Under-21 level, including the 2023 European Under-21 Championship, then began playing for Belgium's senior team in 2025. Milan dates his senior debut to the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. Youth Portugal and senior Belgium are distinct stages of his career. He was part of Belgium's squad at the 2026 World Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals, and came on as a substitute in the 3–2 extra-time win over Senegal in the round of 32.
After joining Milan from Strasbourg in August 2026, Moreira gave a sharp example of his attacking threat against Lazio that September. Sent on down the left at half-time, he scored twice with his left foot as Milan recovered from two goals down to draw. The club later named him its fan-voted September player of the month. His left-sided cameo showed his finishing threat alongside the wider range of roles Milan had described.
Diego Moreira currently plays for AC Milan as a right winger. He has represented Belgium internationally.
