Profile
Florian Thauvin is a French forward whose left foot shapes his game. Starting from the right, he can carry the ball infield and curl a shot towards goal. He has also played as a second striker, giving him freedom to move across the attack rather than staying beside the touchline.
Born in Orléans, Thauvin developed at Grenoble before joining Bastia in 2011. He helped the Corsican club win promotion from Ligue 2, then made his breakthrough in the top flight. His 2012/13 performances earned the UNFP award for Ligue 1's best young player.
Marseille signed him in September 2013. A move to Newcastle followed in 2015, but he returned to Marseille in 2016. He scored 22 Ligue 1 goals in 2017/18 and helped Marseille reach that season's Europa League final, which they lost to Atlético Madrid.
His international career brought two different world titles. Thauvin played in France's victorious Under-20 World Cup campaign in 2013, then joined the senior champions in Russia in 2018. His only appearance at the latter tournament came as a substitute against Argentina in the round of 16.
He moved to Tigres in Mexico in 2021 and joined Udinese in January 2023. At his Italian unveiling, he explained that roaming as a second striker was his preferred role despite his grounding on the right wing. That preference helps explain his game: his starting position need not confine where he receives the ball or attacks.
A return to French football followed when Lens signed him in August 2025. In October, he scored for France against Azerbaijan after coming off the bench. The goal showed his combination play: he passed to Théo Hernandez, moved into the box and finished the return cross with an acrobatic left-footed effort.
Thauvin then helped Lens win their first Coupe de France in May 2026. In the 3–1 final victory over Nice, he scored the opener and supplied the corner for Odsonne Édouard's header. He added the only goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the Trophée des Champions that August, arriving at the far post to finish with his right foot.
