Profile
Mamadou Sangaré is a Malian central midfielder whose defensive work does more than stop an attack. He closes ground to contest the ball, then looks to carry it forward or find a pass that keeps his team moving. Pierre Sage, his coach at Lens, described that pairing of ball recovery and progression as the unusual part of his game.
Born in Bamako, Sangaré came through Yeelen Olympique before joining Red Bull Salzburg in 2020. Senior football came through FC Liefering and loans in Austria and Belgium. A longer spell at Hartberg gave him regular Austrian Bundesliga football; his former coach Markus Schopp later said the midfielder became more consistent there. Rapid Vienna signed him in July 2024.
After a season with Rapid, he joined Lens in August 2025. The step into Ligue 1 quickly put his range of work on display. He won possession in the opposition half as well as creating chances. In a January 2026 move against Marseille, he recovered the ball and used the outside of his left foot to create a goal for Rayan Fofana. The example shows how a defensive action can become the first pass of an attack.
That Lens season brought both team success and individual recognition. Sangaré started the May 2026 Coupe de France final as Lens beat Nice, and the club finished second in Ligue 1. He was selected for the UNFP league team of the season and received the Prix Marc-Vivien Foé for the leading African player in France’s top division.
Sangaré also played for Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations staged from December 2025 into January 2026. He appeared in the quarter-final against Senegal, where Mali’s run ended in a 1–0 defeat.
Brentford announced his transfer from Lens on 31 July 2026. The attraction of his game is clearest in the accounts of people who worked with him. Sage highlighted both the ball wins and the forward carries; former teammate Malang Sarr pointed to his willingness to receive passes, enter duels and drive forward with his left foot. Together, those accounts explain how he can influence both sides of a midfield possession.
Mamadou Sangaré currently plays for Brentford as a defensive midfielder. He has represented Mali internationally.
