Career & playing style
Jorthy Mokio’s development has taken him from defence into midfield. Ajax announced his arrival from KAA Gent in June 2024 as a central defender, after he had already appeared for Gent’s first team. The club initially said he would join its under-23 squad, but his first-team opportunity came quickly.
He made his Ajax debut in the Europa League play-off return against Jagiellonia Białystok on 29 August 2024. Ajax described him as its youngest foreign first-team debutant. The next February, he volleyed in from the edge of the area against Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels. UEFA records that goal as the youngest scored in a Europa League knockout match.
The defender label does not tell the whole story. Ajax’s player profile lists Mokio as a midfielder, while UEFA has used defender for his club position and midfielder for his national-team position. In the middle, his defensive contribution is visible when he closes passing lanes, wins the ball and gives his side a chance to build again. Ajax’s account of a March 2026 win over Sparta singled out his recoveries, clearances and interceptions.
His finishing has supplied several moments too, without making him a specialist forward. In December 2025, he came on against Feyenoord and scored deep into stoppage time to seal a 2–0 Ajax win. In the August 2026 league opener at PEC Zwolle, another substitute appearance brought the breakthrough: he met a lay-off from Tolu after Ajax had been pressing for an opening.
International football has followed a separate path from his club development. UEFA’s match report shows Mokio entering for Belgium against Ukraine in a Nations League play-off on 20 March 2025, a senior appearance rather than merely a squad call-up. Later that year, Ajax reported that he scored for Belgium’s under-21 side in a European qualifier against Wales.
Those episodes explain his range better than a single position tag. The Gent youth player has been used across defensive and central areas, contributed to winning possession and produced goals in European, domestic and youth international matches. His move into midfield has broadened the ways he can affect a match, while the records still show a player building his senior career.
