Profile
Geovany Quenda is a wide attacker whose game centres on taking on defenders with the ball. His speed and changes of direction give an attack a way to move forward through an individual duel. UEFA's technical observers highlighted those qualities at the 2025 European Under-21 Championship, where he was particularly effective in a Portugal side that threatened on the break.
Born in Guinea-Bissau, he began his football education in Portugal with Damaiense, spent two seasons at Benfica and joined Sporting CP in 2019. He progressed through Sporting's youth teams, including the side that won the national under-15 championship in 2021/22. In 2023/24 he stepped up to the under-23s and also played in Liga 3, moving towards senior football through more than one age group.
His first senior Sporting goal came against Porto in the Portuguese Super Cup in August 2024, making him the club's youngest goalscorer. His breakthrough campaign then brought a different kind of achievement: he helped Sporting win the Portuguese league and cup double in 2024/25. He was also named Liga Portugal's Young Player of the Season. In September 2025 he scored against Kairat to become the youngest Portuguese player to score in the Champions League era.
Quenda's attacking instincts were visible before that breakthrough. In a 2021 Sporting interview he described his enjoyment of beating an opponent, creating goals and finishing chances himself. His later use on either attacking flank and at wing-back gave those instincts different starting positions. The common thread is a willingness to carry the ball at a defender; in a counterattack, that can turn space into forward progress before opponents recover their shape.
Portugal's youth tournaments provided another stage. He helped the under-17s finish runners-up in the 2024 European Championship and made UEFA's tournament team. At the 2025 under-21 edition he scored three goals and again earned selection in the tournament team, while Portugal exited in the quarter-finals. Supporters also chose his goal against Poland as their goal of that tournament.
Chelsea confirmed his arrival from Sporting in July 2026 after two seasons of senior football in Lisbon. That move followed a development path that combined academy progression, domestic trophies and European youth competition, with experience both further forward on the wing and in the deeper starting position of a wing-back.
