Profile
Diogo Costa is a Portuguese goalkeeper who can influence an attack before an outfield player touches the ball. His long passing can release a runner directly, while his work in one-on-one situations combines concentration with reading the attacker’s movement and body language.
Born on 19 September 1999 in Switzerland, he moved with his family to the Porto area when he was seven. He progressed through Porto’s youth teams and helped win the UEFA Youth League in 2019. His first-team debut followed in September that year, before he established himself as the regular goalkeeper in the 2021/22 season.
That rise carried into the national side. Fernando Santos selected him for Portugal’s decisive World Cup qualifying play-offs against Turkey and North Macedonia in March 2022, ahead of the experienced Rui Patrício. Portugal won both matches to reach Qatar, giving Costa an early opportunity to handle senior international knockout football.
His distribution produced a clear example of its attacking value against Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022. A long pass released Galeno to score the opening goal of Porto’s 3–0 Champions League win. Costa also saved a penalty in that match: his contribution covered both creating a chance and preventing a goal.
At EURO 2024, he stopped Benjamin Šeško in extra time before saving all three Slovenia penalties in the round-of-16 shootout. He became the first goalkeeper to save three kicks in a single men’s EURO shootout. Afterwards, he explained that preparation on penalty takers had to be combined with reacting to their decisions on the night; for the Šeško save, he had read the striker’s body language.
Another shootout save, from Álvaro Morata, helped Portugal win the 2025 Nations League final against Spain. His club honours also include Portuguese league titles with Porto in 2021/22 and 2025/26. At the 2026 World Cup, Portugal’s campaign ended in the round of 16 with a 1–0 defeat by Spain.
Diogo Costa currently plays for FC Porto as a goalkeeper. He has represented Portugal internationally.
