Profile
Martim Fernandes is a Portuguese full-back shaped by Porto's academy. He usually starts on the right but has also played on the left. That flexibility gives a team a route upfield from either flank while keeping a defender in the build-up.
Fernandes grew up in Valongo and entered Porto's youth system at eleven. He made his professional debut for Porto B against SC Covilhã in August 2022, then received his first senior-team minutes in an October 2023 Portuguese Cup tie against Vilar de Perdizes. The B-team stage gave him competitive football before more first-team opportunities arrived.
During 2023/24 he helped Porto's under-19s reach the UEFA Youth League final four. Their run ended against Milan in April 2024, when a late equaliser forced penalties and Milan advanced. That season he also played in Porto's Portuguese Cup final victory over Sporting, an early senior team honour.
Another landmark came in the August 2024 Portuguese Super Cup. Fernandes played the full match as Porto recovered from three goals down to beat Sporting after extra time. Porto later described the following campaign as his step into sustained first-team football. His route had crossed youth competition, the second tier and major senior matches.
His attacking contribution begins with movement along the outside lane. Porto has described him as capable on both flanks and highlighted his final passes, while youth coach António Frasco singled out his reading of important phases of play. He is a defender who can judge when to advance and offer a passing outlet.
Portugal's under-21 side offered another test. Fernandes debuted as the starting right-back against Bulgaria in October 2025, leaving during the second half of a 3–0 qualifying win. In a later federation interview, he described an instruction to keep the ball but still carry it forward with courage. That captures the balance his role asks for: control, then progress when space opens.
Porto won the 2025/26 Portuguese league title, and Fernandes made league appearances during that campaign. His path connected academy football, Porto B, domestic and European senior matches, and Portugal under-21 qualifying. The through-line is his use on either flank: he can offer a passing outlet and move forward when space appears.
Martim Fernandes currently plays for FC Porto as a right-back.
