Profile
Théo Hernández is a French left-back whose runs can turn a defensive position into an attacking one. He can carry the ball upfield himself or accelerate beyond a teammate to receive it, giving the left side another route towards goal.
Born in Marseille on 6 October 1997, he developed in Atlético Madrid’s academy before spending 2016/17 on loan at Alavés. He helped the club reach the Copa del Rey final, scoring a free-kick in its 3–1 defeat by Barcelona. Real Madrid signed him in July 2017.
After a season at Real Sociedad, he joined AC Milan in July 2019. He was part of the side that won Serie A in 2021/22, and later added the Italian Super Cup played in early 2025.
His goal against Atalanta in May 2022 captured the directness of his game: he collected the ball in defence, drove towards the opposition penalty area and finished to seal a 2–0 win. UEFA’s analysis of Milan against Salzburg later that year showed a complementary threat: runs up the left to receive passes, cross or shoot. His starting position at full-back did not keep him outside the attack.
Hernández made his senior France debut against Finland on 7 September 2021. A month later, his late winner completed a comeback from two goals down against Belgium in the Nations League semi-final. France went on to win the tournament.
At the 2022 World Cup, he scored in the semi-final victory over Morocco and helped France reach the final, where they finished runners-up. He also played at the 2026 World Cup, when France finished fourth after losing the third-place match to England.
In July 2025, he moved from Milan to Al-Hilal. Another decisive goal followed on 8 May 2026: he scored Al-Hilal’s second in a 2–1 victory over Al-Kholood in the King’s Cup final, adding a Saudi cup title to his European club honours.
Théo Hernández currently plays for Al-Hilal Saudi FC as a left-back. He has represented France internationally.
