Profile
Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese forward who reshaped his game around scoring. At Manchester United he attacked defenders as a winger; at Real Madrid he combined starting from the left with moves towards goal. His later penalty-area game draws on finding space and finishing quickly.
Born in Funchal on 5 February 1985, he made his Sporting CP first-team debut in August 2002, against Inter in Champions League qualifying. A year later he moved to Manchester United, where his stepovers and quick feet introduced him to a wider audience.
His breakthrough as a goalscorer was underlined by 42 goals in all competitions in 2007/08, when United won the Premier League and Champions League. He scored in the European final against Chelsea and won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008.
He joined Real Madrid in 2009 and left in 2018 as the club’s record scorer. Across those nine seasons he helped win four Champions Leagues and two LaLiga titles. The freedom to move infield from the left allowed him to concentrate increasingly on finishing attacks.
Juventus signed him in July 2018; he won the Serie A scoring title in 2020/21 before returning to United that August. His move to Al-Nassr was announced in December 2022. In May 2026, he scored twice against Damac in the victory that secured their 2025/26 Saudi league title.
With Portugal, he captained the teams that won EURO 2016 and the Nations League in 2019 and 2025. In the 2025 final against Spain, his volley from a deflected Nuno Mendes cross helped Portugal reach the shootout they went on to win.
At the 2026 World Cup, he became the first man to score at six editions of the tournament. Following Portugal’s round-of-16 exit to Spain, he announced that this had been his final World Cup.
One of his two goals against Uzbekistan in that tournament illustrated the finishing habit behind the records: he found a small pocket of space inside the box and struck a cross first time. The decisive work came before the shot, getting free so that he could finish without an extra controlling touch.
Cristiano Ronaldo currently plays for Al-Nassr as a striker. He has represented Portugal internationally.
