Profile
José López, better known as Flaco, gives an attack a target through the middle and a runner when space opens up. He can finish a move after receiving a pass on a counter-attack, or take the ball outside the penalty area, turn and shoot. His scoring also includes getting on the end of crosses, offering teammates different ways to find him.
His development into a senior striker took place at Lanús. After playing in the Argentine club's youth teams, López was promoted to the first team during the 2019–20 season. His goals in the campaigns that followed brought him wider attention before the next stage of his career took him to Brazil.
Palmeiras announced his signing in June 2022. He became part of their Brazilian league-winning squads in 2022 and 2023. His early trophies in São Paulo also included the Paulista championships of 2023 and 2024 and the 2023 Brazilian Supercup.
A goal against Al Ahly at the 2025 Club World Cup showed what López could offer from the bench. Introduced at half-time, he found space as Palmeiras counter-attacked, received Maurício's pass and finished to help secure a 2–0 victory. The move gave a clear example of his ability to arrive as a direct passing option when the game opened up.
López added another Paulista title in 2026 and made his World Cup debut for Argentina against Jordan that June. He was part of the Argentina squad that reached the final.
His two goals against Santos in the Copa do Brasil in August 2026 illustrated another side of his finishing. For the opener he received from Andreas Pereira, turned outside the area and drove a shot into the corner. His second came from an Agustín Giay cross, helping Palmeiras win the first leg of their quarter-final 3–0.
