Overview

FC Zürich in brief

FC Zurich was formed in summer 1896 by former members of local clubs FC Turicum and FC Excelsior; 1 August 1896 was later fixed as the official founding date. A co-founder and the first captain was Joan Gamper, who went on to found Barcelona in 1899. FC Excelsior merged into the club in 1898. The first colours were blue and white; after a spell in red and white the club returned to them in 1909, and it has worn all-white since the 1960s. Its home since 1925 is the Letzigrund, rebuilt in 2006-07.

Zurich were Swiss champions in 1901-02 and 1923-24, then went through lean years with relegations in 1934, 1946 and 1957. Under president Edwin Nageli they won seven titles between 1963 and 1981 and five Swiss Cups, and reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1963-64 and 1976-77, losing to Real Madrid and Liverpool. After relegation in 1988 and a return in 1990, Iulian Filipescu's 93rd-minute winner at Basel in May 2006 ended a 25-year title wait. More titles followed in 2007, 2009 and 2022, and a 2016 cup win came days after relegation.
