Overview

Cardiff in brief

Founded in 1899 as Riverside AFC, Cardiff City took their present name in 1908 and represent the Welsh capital. The club are known as the Bluebirds, or Yr Adar Gleision in Welsh, and blue has been their colour since 1908, apart from a red home kit between 2012 and 2015. Cardiff play at Cardiff City Stadium, opened in 2009 to replace Ninian Park, which had been their home since 1910.

Cardiff remain the only club from outside England to have won the FA Cup, beating Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley in 1927, when captain Fred Keenor received the trophy from King George V. The same year they won the Charity Shield, and in 1923-24 they had finished First Division runners-up to Huddersfield Town on goal average. Cardiff have won the Welsh Cup 22 times and reached the 1968 European Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals, and their league titles include the Third Division South in 1946-47, the fourth-tier Third Division in 1992-93 and the Championship in 2012-13.
