Overview

Portsmouth in brief

Founded in 1898, Portsmouth have played at Fratton Park since the ground opened in 1899. The club share the nickname Pompey with the city and its naval base, and "The Pompey Chimes" is the supporters' best-known chant. The team have worn blue shirts since 1912, usually with white shorts and the red socks adopted after the Second World War, and Portsmouth are the only professional club in England not based on mainland Great Britain, as the city and Fratton Park stand on Portsea Island.

Portsmouth were champions of England in 1948-49 and 1949-50 and have won the FA Cup twice. After the 1939 final, the Second World War halted normal football, so they held the trophy for a record seven years; the second win came in 2008. The first club from south of London to reach the First Division, Portsmouth are one of five English clubs to have been champions of all four professional divisions, adding the second tier in 2002-03, third-tier titles in 1923-24, 1961-62, 1982-83 and 2023-24, and League Two in 2016-17.
