Overview

Hannover 96 in brief

Hannover 96 were founded on 12 April 1896 as Hannoverscher Fussball-Club 1896, a club that first concentrated on athletics and rugby before football took over in 1899. A merger with BV Hannovera 1898 in 1913 created the Hannoverscher Sport-Verein von 1896. The club colours are black, white and green, but the team plays in red, hence the name Die Roten. Home since 1959 has been the former Niedersachsenstadion, opened in 1954 and called Heinz von Heiden Arena since July 2022.

Hannover were German champions in 1938 and 1954. In 1992, as a second-tier side, they beat Borussia Monchengladbach on penalties in the DFB-Pokal final; up to 2026 no other club from outside the top division had won the final. They have won the 2. Bundesliga three times, the last in 2001-02 with 75 points. Fourth place in 2010-11 took them into the 2011-12 Europa League, where they lost a quarter-final to Atletico Madrid. Relegated in 2016, they bounced straight back, then went down again in 2019.
