Overview

St Johnstone in brief

St Johnstone grew out of a Perth cricket club in 1884, when members kicked a football around the South Inch to keep fit after the cricket season. Early in 1885 a group led by John Colborn set up the football club as a separate body, and it played its first match that February. The name comes from St John's Toun, an old name for Perth; the nickname is 'Saints'. After the Recreation Grounds and Muirton Park (1924-1989), the club moved to McDiarmid Park, named after local farmer Bruce McDiarmid, who donated the land.

Members of the Scottish League since 1911-12, St Johnstone long moved between the top two divisions and have won the second tier eight times. They have never won the top flight, finishing third in 1970-71, 1998-99 and 2012-13. The first of those led to the 1971-72 UEFA Cup, where they knocked out Hamburg and Vasas. Their first Scottish Cup came in 2014, 2-0 against Dundee United. In 2020-21 they won the League Cup and the Scottish Cup, both 1-0 with Shaun Rooney goals. Relegated in May 2025, they returned as 2025-26 Championship winners.
