Overview

Viborg in brief

Viborg Fodsports Forening, usually shortened to Viborg FF or VFF, was founded on 1 April 1896 in Viborg, Central Jutland. It started as a club for several sports, cricket among them, and football came later. In 1924 Viborg won the Mesterraekken, then the top league in Jutland, and from 1929, after the other sports split off, the club played only football. The team plays in green and is nicknamed De Gronne (the Greens). After starting at Eksercerpladsen, Viborg moved in 1931 to Viborg Stadium. The ground was rebuilt in 2001, has been called Energi Viborg Arena since 2011 and holds 10,000.

Viborg reached the national divisions in 1959 and had single top-flight seasons in 1980 and 1989. They first reached the Superliga in 1993 and stayed there from 1998 to 2008. The club's major trophies came in 2000: a 1-0 win over AaB in the Danish Cup final at Parken, then the Danish Super Cup, won on penalties against Herfolge. In the 2000-01 UEFA Cup they knocked out CSKA Moscow before losing to Rayo Vallecano on away goals. After years of moving between divisions, Viborg won the 1st Division in 2020-21. In 2022-23 they reached the Conference League play-off round, where West Ham United won 6-1 on aggregate.
