Overview

Botafogo in brief

Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas took its present form on 8 December 1942, when two Rio de Janeiro clubs merged: Club de Regatas Botafogo, a rowing club founded on 1 July 1894, and Botafogo Football Club, founded in 1904. The merger followed the sudden death of basketball player Armando Albano during a game between the two. Both clubs already played in black and white, and the rowing club brought its lone star, hence the nickname Estrela Solitaria. Home since 2007 has been the Estadio Nilton Santos, known as the Engenhao.

The CBF counts three Brasileirao titles for Botafogo: the 1968 Taca Brasil, 1995 and 2024. In 2024 they won the league by six points from Palmeiras and took their first Copa Libertadores, beating Atletico Mineiro 3-1 in the final in Buenos Aires despite having Gregore sent off early in the match. The club also won the 1993 Copa Conmebol and four Torneio Rio-Sao Paulo titles, and in June 2025 beat European champions Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the Club World Cup.
