Overview

Flamengo in brief

Flamengo began as a rowing club, founded in November 1895 by a group of rowers in Rio de Janeiro's Flamengo neighbourhood. Football arrived at the end of 1911, when about ten players left Fluminense after a dispute with its board and set up a football department at Flamengo; the first official match, in May 1912, was a 16-2 win over Mangueira. The team plays in red and black and has used the Maracana, officially the Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho, since 1950.

Flamengo's first great era, built around Zico, brought Brasileirao titles in 1980, 1982 and 1983, plus the 1981 Copa Libertadores and a 3-0 Intercontinental Cup win over Liverpool. By the end of 2025 the CBF counted eight league titles, the others in 1992, 2009, 2019, 2020 and 2025; the club also claims the 1987 Copa Uniao, which the CBF and Brazil's Supreme Court award to Sport. Flamengo have five Copas do Brasil and four Libertadores, the latest won 1-0 against Palmeiras in Lima in November 2025.
