Overview

Volos in brief

Volos NFC (New Football Club Volos) was created in 2017 in Volos, Magnesia, after years of failed talks on merging the city's older clubs, Niki Volos and Olympiacos Volos. The push came from the mayor, Achilleas Beos. Pydna Kitros, a club from Pieria, was dissolved and gave its place in the third-tier Gamma Ethniki to the new club, which was presented on 2 June 2017. Volos play in red and blue. They used the small Neapoli Municipal Stadium until 2019, then moved to the 22,700-capacity Panthessaliko Stadium, built for the 2004 Olympic Games.

The club rose quickly. In 2017-18 Volos won Group 4 of the Gamma Ethniki and went up after finishing second behind Iraklis in their promotion play-off group. As newcomers they then won the 2018-19 Football League, at that time the second tier, sealing promotion with six rounds to spare. They have played in the Super League since 2019-20. Their best runs so far are a first Greek Cup quarter-final in 2020-21, lost 4-3 on aggregate to AEK Athens, and a top-six regular-season finish in 2022-23. In the championship play-offs that followed, they took one point from ten games.
