Overview

GKS Katowice in brief

GKS Katowice, widely known as GieKSa, are a football club from Katowice in Upper Silesia. The club was founded on 27 February 1964, when several Katowice clubs, including Gornik Katowice, Koszutka Katowice and Rapid/Orzel Welnowiec, merged into a single multi-sports club. GKS stands for Gorniczy Klub Sportowy, or Miners' Sports Club, a nod to the region's coal-mining industry. The team play in yellow, green and black. After decades at the old ground on Bukowa Street, the club moved in 2025 to the 15,048-capacity Arena Katowice, which opened on 30 March 2025.

GKS have never been Polish champions, but between 1986 and 1995 they were Ekstraklasa runners-up four times, in 1988, 1989, 1992 and 1994, won the Polish Cup in 1986, 1991 and 1993, and won the Polish Super Cup in 1991 and 1995. Their best European run came in the 1994-95 UEFA Cup, when they beat Aris Thessaloniki on penalties and then Girondins Bordeaux before losing to Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16. They also reached the second round of the Cup Winners' Cup twice. Financial problems dropped the club to the fourth tier in 2005. They returned to the Ekstraklasa in 2024 after 19 years away.
