Overview

Panetolikos in brief

Panetolikos was founded in Agrinio, western Greece, on 9 March 1926 as the Pan-Aetolian Gymnastic and Educational Club. The founders aimed to educate poor children through the club's night schools, which is why "Educational" is in its name. The society ran athletics, volleyball, basketball and shooting sections before starting a football team in 1930. The team plays in yellow and blue, which earned it the nickname "the Canaries" in the 1960s, and its crest shows Titormus, an ancient Aetolian hero. Home games are at Panetolikos Stadium, a football ground since 1930.

Panetolikos won its group of the Beta Ethniki in 1974-75 and played two top-flight seasons, 1975-76 and 1976-77, reaching the Greek Cup quarter-finals in the first. More than 30 years in the lower divisions followed, with third-tier titles in 1984-85, 1991-92 and 1995-96. After owner Fotis Kostoulas took over in 2005, the club won the second-tier Football League in 2010-11. Relegated after one season, it returned through the 2012-13 play-offs, finished seventh in 2014-15, reached the Greek Cup semi-finals in 2023-24 and avoided relegation through the play-outs in its centenary season, 2025-26.
