Overview

Panathinaikos in brief

Panathinaikos was founded in Athens on 3 February 1908 by Giorgos Kalafatis, a 17-year-old athlete who broke away from Panellinios Gymnastikos Syllogos after it dropped football. The club began as Podosfairikos Omilos Athinon in red and white, switched to green and white in 1910 and adopted the shamrock emblem in 1918, the source of the nickname Trifylli. It moved to Leoforos Alexandras in 1922 and took the name Panathinaikos in 1924. For the 2026-27 season the club moved its home games to the Athens Olympic Stadium, pending a new ground at Votanikos.

Panathinaikos have won 20 Greek championships, the first in 1929-30 and the latest in 2009-10, and 20 Greek Cups, the latest in 2024, with eight doubles. They are one of three clubs never relegated from the Greek top division, and won the 1963-64 title unbeaten under Stjepan Bobek. In 1971, coached by Ferenc Puskas, they became the only Greek club to reach the European Cup final, losing 2-0 to Ajax at Wembley. They also reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1985 and 1996.
