Overview

Rio Ave in brief

Founded in 1939, Rio Ave are the football club of Vila do Conde, a coastal town north of Porto. They play in green-and-white striped shirts and are known as the Vilacondenses or Rioavistas. Home matches are played at the Estadio do Rio Ave FC, better known as the Estadio dos Arcos because it stands beside the arches of an 18th-century aqueduct.

Rio Ave's senior honours are four second-tier titles, won in 1985-86, 1995-96, 2002-03 and 2021-22, and the 1976-77 third-tier Terceira Divisao. They reached the Taca de Portugal final in 1984, losing to Porto, and in 2014 played both the Taca de Portugal and Taca da Liga finals, losing each to Benfica. That season earned the club's first European campaign, which reached the Europa League group stage, and in 2020 they took AC Milan to a 9-8 penalty shoot-out in a Europa League play-off.
