Overview

Göztepe in brief

Founded on 14 June 1925 as Goztepe Genclik Kulubu, Goztepe are a football club rooted in the Goztepe and Guzelyali neighbourhoods of Izmir. The red-and-yellow team are known as Goz Goz. For much of their history they played at the Alsancak Stadium, and since January 2020 their home has been the Gursel Aksel Stadium, opened with a Super Lig match against Besiktas and home to a club museum.

Goztepe became Turkish champions in 1950, winning the national championship held before the professional league began, and won the Turkish Cup in 1969 and 1970 as well as the 1970 Presidential Cup, today's Turkish Super Cup. In 1968-69 they became the first Turkish club to reach the semi-finals of a European competition, in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and reached the Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals the following season. The club have also won three second-tier titles and two third-tier titles, the latter during a climb back after dropping into amateur football in 2007.
