Overview

Hibernian in brief

Hibernian were founded on 6 August 1875 in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh by members of the Catholic Young Men's Society, part of the city's Irish community. Father Edward Joseph Hannan was the first president and Michael Whelahan the first captain. The name comes from Hibernia, the Latin name for Ireland. After losing its ground, the club briefly stopped playing in 1891 but counts its history as continuous. Hibs have played at Easter Road in Leith since February 1893, and have worn green shirts with white sleeves since 1938.

Hibs won the Scottish Cup in 1887, becoming the first club from Scotland's east coast to win a major trophy, then won the cup in 1902 and the league in 1903. Further league titles followed in 1947-48, 1950-51 and 1951-52. Invited into the first European Cup in 1955-56, Hibs became the first British club to play in it and reached the semi-finals. They won the League Cup in 1972-73, 1991-92 and 2006-07, were relegated in 1931, 1980, 1998 and 2014, and ended a 114-year wait for the Scottish Cup by beating Rangers 3-2 in 2016.
