Overview

Rapid Vienna in brief

Rapid was founded in Vienna in 1897 as Erster Wiener Arbeiter-Fussball-Club (First Viennese Workers' Football Club). On 8 January 1899 it took the name Sportklub Rapid, following the example of Rapide Berlin; "Wien" or "Vienna" is added in everyday use but is not part of the official name. The original red and blue gave way to green and white in 1904, hence the nickname Die Grun-Weissen (The Green-Whites). Since 2016 the club has played at the Allianz Stadion in Hutteldorf, in the city's 14th district, built on the site of the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium.

Rapid won Austria's first national championship in 1911-12 and retained it in 1912-13. Its 32 Austrian titles are the most of any club, the latest in 2007-08, and it has won 14 Austrian Cups, the latest in 1994-95. After the 1938 annexation it played in the German system, winning the German cup (Tschammerpokal) in 1938 and the 1941 German championship, beating Schalke 4-3 after trailing 3-0. Rapid won the Mitropa Cup in 1930, reached the 1960-61 European Cup semi-finals and lost Cup Winners' Cup finals in 1985 and 1996. It has never been relegated.
